Legal Associate
Summary of Position
Supervised by the Director of Legal Initiatives for Yale's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, the Legal Associate will be responsible for researching, analyzing and creating scholarly work about legal initiatives around obesity and food policy issues.
Essential Duties
- Work directly with the Rudd Center's Director of Legal Initiatives as a team to build the legal reputation of the Rudd Center.
- Provide key legal analyses and support for identified policy options concerning child marketing issues, food policy, weight bias and obesity prevention.
- Contribute to existing scholarship on legal interventions in the above-mentioned areas (hereinafter, "obesity policy").
- Assess the legal environment on a global, national, state and/or local level on institutional, statutory, regulatory or case-based laws and policies that may impact the recommendations for affirmative changes in obesity policy.
- Propose meaningful legal solutions to actual or perceived impediments to reforming obesity policy.
- Translate existing scientific findings into essential legal reforms needed to effect real change.
- Prepare, write and edit legal memos or synopses on key issues or major developments at the intersection of obesity policy and public health law, which may be used for publication in journals, newspapers and magazines.
- Explore alternative legal approaches taken in varied jurisdictions to make positive changes in obesity policy.
- Evaluate the different effects of varied legal approaches.
- Explain legal option to non-lawyers.
- Represent the Rudd Center at meetings, conferences and speaking engagements.
- Work collaboratively with the Center to carry out its priorities.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree and one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, required. Law degree (Juris Doctor), recent graduates and more senior applicants strongly encouraged.
- Familiarity with food and obesity policy issues.
- Experience in public speaking and presentations.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Excellent public speaking skills for multiple audiences.
- Ability to travel within and outside Connecticut.
