Communications Assistant
Summary of Position
The Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity is looking to hire a full-time communications assistant to provide a high level of assistance to the Media & Communications Manager. The position will be full-time, starting immediately.
Essential Duties
- Writing assistance: Prepare written material for wide distribution, such as blog entries, Front Burner News articles, white papers, newsletters, press releases, media advisories, and web copy.
- Initiate the flow of information to the Center’s webmaster to ensure timely web updates on Rudd Center news and events (recent publications, faculty presentations, press releases, and so forth).
- Continuously track, maintain, expand upon, and update the following databases:
- All Rudd Center faculty appearances, talks, and presentations.
- Archive of shared files and resources for the Center, including documents and publications; photographs and images; web content; and audiovisual files.
- Contact management system, including full contact information for academic colleagues, policy makers, and members of the press.
- Distribution lists, including staff email lists, newsletter subscribers, and seminar subscribers.
- All press coverage of the Rudd Center, including its initiatives, publications, faculty members, and events.
- All Rudd Center faculty appearances, talks, and presentations.
- Monitor blog comments to track patterns and developments in online conversation about obesity, food policy, and weight bias. Ensure adherence to Rudd Center policies and guidelines.
- Work with the Yale Office of Public Affairs to prepare and disseminate press releases and media advisories to local and national media. Work independently to foster close relationships and ongoing communication with members of the press, including journalists, broadcasters and editors that furthers the Rudd Center’s media presence and reputation.
- Provide media and communications support when new projects arise, or to Rudd Center faculty as needed.
- Serve as Tier I Computer Support
Preferred Knowledge/Experience
- Interest in the fields of obesity, eating behavior and public policy
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Creative Writing, Communications, or related field
- Strong writing background

- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Highly organized, able to manage multiple details and projects at once
- Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as work as a team player when necessary
