Obesity: A Global Epidemic

Once considered a problem only in high-income countries, overweight and obesity are now increasing dramatically in developing nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) first declared obesity a global epidemic in 1998. By 2005, about 1.6 billion adults and more than 20 million children under age 5 were overweight, and 400 million adults were obese. WHO projects that by 2015, 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and over 700 million will be obese. The International Obesity Task Force provides a strong global perspective on this issue.
