Bullying and Weight Bias
Most schools now recognize bullying as a problem and take measures to prevent it. Few schools, however, deal specifically with the bullying and teasing that children face because of their weight. Weight-related bullying can involve physical violence, verbal taunts, or subtler forms like social isolation or the spreading of rumors. For the bullied child, the consequences can be devastating.
The Rudd Center has also initiated a project to assess weight-related bullying in the schools. See our weight bias section for more information on this topic.
