Even After Weight Loss, Fat Cells Remain
Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm report that adults maintain the same number of fat cells in their body even after significant weight loss. The researchers studied fat samples from liposuction and abdominal reconstruction surgery in lean and obese participants and concluded that the number of fat cells in one’s body is determined in childhood, and that the human body replaces fat cells at a rate of roughly 10 percent a year.
