Chicago Alderman Calls for Hearings on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Taxes
February 17, 2012
Ald. George Cardenas, chairman of the Chicago City Council’s Health Committee, proposed a tax on sugary drinks, as much as a penny per ounce. The tax could reduce consumption, obesity, and related healthcare costs, and generate revenue.
“We’ve taken high-sugar content beverages out of the public schools. The next step is to tax them,” said Cardenas. “We have to stem this epidemic.”
